SPECIAL Workshops & Classes
W001 - Sculpture Marathon (Rm 301)
(introductory - advanced) - Cynthia Eardley & Harvey Citron
Monday - Friday: 10am - 5pm (Lunch 1pm - 2pm)
July 13 - 17

$530 = $400 (Tuition) + $50 (Model Fee) + $80 (Materials Fee)

Thirty hours of instruction and model time. Two instructors from the graduate program will co-teach this week-long workshop.

This workshop offers instruction to students modeling the human form. Working from the model, students will sculpt a 24" figure or portrait (please indicate which you would prefer during registration). With the help of demonstrations by the instructors, illustrations from classic texts and frequent reference to casts concerning the underlying bone and musculature, students will learn about anatomy, proportions, planar relatioinships and the flow of volume in three dimensions. A variety of modeling tools and brushes will be described, as well as the uses of water-based clays and methods for achieving desired surface textures. Visual references to the work of past and contemporary figurative sculptors will be provided and interpreted by the instructors.

Space is very limited, please register early.
W002 - Between the Lines – Figure Drawing Workshop (Room 201)
(introductory - advanced) - Stephen Gaffney
Monday - Friday: 10am - 5pm (Lunch 1pm - 2pm)
August 10 - 14

$450 = $400 (Tuition) + $50 (Model Fee)

This workshop presents various methods of depicting the human form. Through analysis of historical and contemporary figuration, focus will be on creating provocative, quick drawings by relying on direct observational drawing and conceptualization. Through a series of exercises and optional homework assignments students will isolate the key structures of the body and create convincing rapid studies. By relying on intuition and overcoming “figure drawing anxiety,” students will learn to change the way they approach drawing from the model.

For the first session, please bring photocopies or books with examples of figure drawings that you admire

Space is very limited, please register early.
W003 - Color Theory – Developing Color in Paint (Room 202)
(introductory - advanced) - Claire McConaughy
Monday - Friday: 10am - 5pm (Lunch 1pm - 2pm)
August 10 - 14

$400 = $400 (Tuition)

Color can be one of an artist’s most powerful tools and used to convey meaning and heighten expression. By addressing color theory, the properties of color and color mixing, among other topics, this control will teach students how to use color effectively.

In this 5 day intensive course, students will begin by painting still lifes with basic color schemes from observation. After practicing mixing and becoming sensitive to the subtleties of color, students will develop their paintings into finished artworks.

Space is very limited, please register early.
W004 - Still Life Workshop - (Room 504)
(introductory - advanced) - Leah Lopez
Monday - Friday: 10am - 5pm (Lunch 1pm - 2pm)
August 10 - 14

$420 = 400 (tuition) + $20 (materials fee) (3 CEUs - Ten 3-hour Sessions)

Inspired by the still life painting of the masters, this course will cover the essential skills needed to achieve luminosity and depth with paint. Students will find their advances made in this course will not only produce beautiful still-lives but will carry over to their other paintings of portraits and figurative work as well. The class consists of lectures, demonstrations and one-on-one instruction, starting with the conceptual design of the painting to observing and translating the beauty of objects into lustrous paint. Understanding the structure of a painting and manipulating paint, brilliant light, supple color and purposeful edge variations an artist can tell a beautiful story and create a distinguished piece of art.

W005 - MASTER CLASS – Art of Drawing the Head (Room 502)
(introductory - advanced) - Edward Schmidt
Saturday & Sunday: 10am - 5pm (Lunch 1pm - 2pm)
August 15 - 16

$400 = $350 (Tuition) + $50 (Model Fee)

This Master Class Drawing Workshop will concentrate on the anatomical, structural and surface forms of the head and features. The head is first considered as a universal paradigm - its forms and proportions basically applicable to all human types and genders.

Lectures illustrated with drawings and diagrams will focus in particular on the eyes, nose, ears, mouth and the larger structural forms of the forehead, jaw and cheek bones. Expression and emotion will be first considered as the articulation of the volumes of the head, neck and upper torso, and secondly as the play of the facial muscles. Male and female models take extended poses for light and shade development.

Space is very limited, please register early.
