FIGURATIVE PAINTING

The first day will start with Grisaille Study, using various toned grounds, a neutral 6 gray, a red oxide & a raw umber putty, to develop an understanding of the process of refining simplified light and shadow shapes, to develop a solid study from the start. Good "Starts" lead to good "Finishes." The Afternoon will progress to the Duo-Tone Study from Life. By adding a single color you will begin to understand the color process, not thinking in tone, but in color temperature, "warm vs. cool" instead of "light vs. dark." Days 2 and 3 will concentrate on full color study, using the Limited Palette. Using the limited palette on a color toned ground simplifies the painting process and helps to keep your paintings unified, under control, enhancing their power "To Hold the Room." Poses will vary from short action poses in the beginning and progress towards more sustained poses for more advanced study. This is a progressive class, one day building on the previous.
