Human Anatomy /
Ecorche David
Klass Tuesday and Thursdays - June 3rd - July 22nd - Class meets twice
a week (15 classes) 6:30 -9:30 $565 (3hrs per week) (4 CEUs) $565 =
$500 (tuition) + $65 (materials fee)
This course offers in-depth
analysis of human anatomy through the construction of an écorché
(anatomical figure). Each student will construct a skeleton from plasteline
(oil based clay), on a specially designed 24" armature, over which they sculpt
the muscles one by one, which effect the surface form. This three- dimensional
approach to the figure is the most successful method for understanding the
complex relationships among the forms of the body. For anyone interested in
sculpting the human figure, constructing an écorché provides an
invaluable experience that will enhance modeling skills. Open to students at
all levels.

Figure Drawing 101
(introductory) Hal Brooks Tuesdays -
June 3rd - August 5th 6:30 - 9:30pm $425 (3hrs per week) (3
CEUs) $425 = $375 (tuition) + $50 (model fee)

sustained poses by the end of the semester. Working from the live model,
students will develop an understanding of figure structure, proper proportion
and the anatomical aspects of the human figure.
Basic principles of
drawing will be discussed, from the proper observation of the model, to the use
of light and shadow to express the volumetric forms of the figure. The use of
line and rhythm will also be explored as a means of representing the expressive
qualities of the human form.

The Bargue Method
(Room 202) (introductory - advanced)
Ard Berge Thursdays -
June 5th - August 7th 6:30 - 9:30 $375 (3hrs per week) (3
CEUs) "Drawing on the Past"- an academic
approach to drawing. This course is designed to give students an introduction
to classical methods of drawing through the study of Charles Bargue and
Jean-Leon Geromes' "Cours de Dessin". The elegant lessons in this artists'
manual will be used to train the eye to see accurately and provide a solid
foundation for the development of a highly rendered drawing. Bargue's approach
to studying drawing has proven particularly effective in giving students the
skills necessary to develop their work in a clear, logical, and systematic way.
It was eventually adopted by all major art curriculums throughout Europe at the
end of the nineteenth century. Lectures and demonstrations will also acquaint
students with the "sight-size" technique, which dates to the fifteenth century
and is especially useful in solving problems with proportion and seeing the
subject in the abstract. The class will begin with students working in
charcoal, copying reproductions from Charles Bargue's "Cours De Dessin"
lithographs. We will then move on to developing a highly finished pencil
drawing from a plaster cast. Finally, the class will conclude with the creation
of a "trois couleur" chalk and charcoal drawing on toned paper of a statue from
the New York Academy's impressive cast collection.

Cast Drawing to
Painting the Figure in Grisaille ( a two part class) (introductory -
advanced) Robert
Zeller Saturdays - June 7th - August 9th 10:00 - 1:00pm and/or 2:00
- 5:00pm
A.M. Session $375 Tuition (3hrs a week) (3
CEUs) P.M. Session $425 = $375 Tuition + $50 Model Fee (3hrs a week)
(3 CEUs) Both Sessions $775 = $725 Tuition + 50 Model Fee (6hrs a
week) (6 CEUs)
A.M. Session: Cast Drawing This class is
not about "drawing statues." Cast drawing, when practiced academically,
provides a means to improve radically one's drawing ability within a short
period of time. Historically, great figurative draftsmen have utilized these
methods that combined both perceptual and conceptual elements. This class fits
within that tradition of High Realism.
P.M. Session:
Painting the Figure in Grisaille Utilizing the skills taught in the
A.M. Session, the students will apply the same methods to working from a live
model.
3 basic techniques will be taught: "Wipe out
method" wiping in the light mass of a painting by removing wet paint from a
still-wet toned surface, with a rag or brush.
Chiascurro adding
a light mass via lead white oil paint in various opacity/thickness over a dry,
dark background. This creates an incredible luminescence in the painting, when
overpainted with colored oils.
10 value scale Students will
learn to control a full range of values over a mid toned ground.
The
following will be pursued over ten weeks: (1) Developing a quick and fluid
accuracy utilizing perceptual ability. (2) Cultivate a conceptual sense of
surface form (3) Learn control of a 10-step value scale (4) Develop an
understanding of how the underpainting dictates the overpainting
In
both sessions, Mr Zeller will demonstrate concepts for the group as well as
provide individual instruction. Students will initially focus on accuracy of
shapes, followed by a more conceptual "turning of form." Optional homework
assignments will supplement the in-class exercises and explore a variety of
drawing media.
PLEASE NOTE: You do not have to register for both
sections. You may take the session(s) that best address the type of instruction
you wish to receive.
