CATHERINE HOWE

Catherine Howe received her MFA in painting from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She had her first exhibition in New York at White Columns in 1987. After serving as Curator at Hallwalls, an artists- run space in Buffalo started by Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, et al. for several years after Graduate School, she moved to New York to become Associate Director of White Columns and to work with the legendarily energetic, Bill Arning. She emerged as an artist in the 1990’s, while in this creative nonprofit gallery milieu along with artists such as John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage; artists also interested in painting a new figuration (see Art in America “Picturehood is Powerful, Barry Schwabsky, 1999.)

She left her position at White Columns in 1995 to concentrate on her paintings full time. Since then She has taught painting and criticism at the Pennsylvania State University, Senior Seminar at SVA and has lectured at many other institutions including RISD, Parsons, Washington University, and the Otis Art Institute. She is currently on the Fulltime faculty, Graduate Painting, at the New York Academy of Art, where she also runs a seminar on contemporary culture. Her work has been discussed in numerous publications including The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Flash Art, the New Art Examiner, and The Los Angeles Times. Her paintings have been exhibited extensively in New York, including solo exhibitions at Liz Koury, Littlejohn Contemporary, Bill Maynes Gallery, and Casey Kaplan Gallery. Exhibitions abroad include Yukiko Kawase, in Paris, Galeria Raygun in Spain, Johan Jonker in Amsterdam, and Thomas von Lintel in Munich She held a one-artist exhibition in May of 2007 entitled, “Revivify” at Claire Oliver Gallery in Chelsea.
