Application Process

The admissions policies of the New York Academy of Art guarantee fair education opportunity in compliance with existing federal and state laws against discrimination for reasons of race, color, gender, age, religion, ethnic or national origin, sexual orientation or physical handicap. The following steps must be followed by any candidate for full-time or part-time admission to the New York Academy of Art:

  1. Candidates must complete the application form in the back of this catalogue and return it to the Academy with a $70 non-refundable application fee. They must submit official transcripts from all undergraduate colleges attended. They must submit letters of recommendation from two artistically-knowledgeable individuals familiar with their work.

  2. They must submit a slide portfolio of no more than twenty 35mm cardboard- or plastic-mounted slides. The slide portfolio must include five to ten slides of figure drawings done from the model. All work should be from observation and/or imagination; work from photographs is not acceptable. Some slides should be of work done outside of class. Applicants should not submit slides of details of included works. Those submitting slides of sculptures should include no more than two views of each sculpture. All slides should be numbered and labeled with the applicant's name and the medium, size and date the work was completed, and each slide should be marked to indicate its top and front. The slides should be placed in a slide sheet labeled with the applicant's name. A self-addressed stamped envelope must be included for return of the slides. The Admissions and Scholarship Committee will only review slide portfolios; work submitted in any other format will not be considered.

  3. International applicants must submit a certified English translation of their academic transcripts from all undergraduate institutions attended. Those whose native language is not English must also demonstrate evidence of English speaking ability by supplying TOEFL [Test of English as a Foreign Language] scores or through a personal interview. (Those taking the TOEFL should use TOEFL School Code 1000 and indicate that scores should be sent to the New York Academy of Art, 111 Franklin Street, New York, NY 10013.) International applicants must also complete and return to the school in order to be eligible to receive student visas. You may download the international application here.
